Location: Thornbury Golf Club, Gloucestershire Reports to: Head Greenkeeper Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience Contract: Full-Time, Permanent Hours: 40 hours per week, including weekends and early mornings on a rota basis

 

Thornbury Golf Club is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Greenkeeper to join our experienced and passionate greens team. Our club boasts two beautiful courses — the 18-hole Marlwood Course and the 9-hole Severn View Course — set in stunning South Gloucestershire countryside. We take pride in offering exceptional playing conditions for our members and guests year-round. 

 

Purpose of the Role:

To assist in the preparation, maintenance, and improvement of the golf courses and associated areas at Thornbury Golf Club, ensuring high standards of playability and presentation in line with the club’s expectations.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out daily maintenance of all golf course features including greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and rough.
  • Operate a variety of turf maintenance machinery safely and effectively (mowers, tractors, blowers, etc.).
  • Implement mowing schedules and course set-up as directed by the Head Greenkeeper.
  • Undertake irrigation duties including hand-watering, operation of automated systems, and maintenance of sprinkler heads.
  • Apply fertilisers, pesticides, and other treatments in accordance with industry standards and legislation (subject to certification).
  • Assist with course renovation, drainage, and improvement projects.
  • Maintain all equipment and tools in clean and safe working order.
  • Follow all health & safety procedures and maintain accurate records when required.
  • Support the club’s sustainability and environmental initiatives.
  • Work flexibly to meet seasonal demands, including early mornings, weekends, and holiday cover.

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Experience in golf course maintenance or similar turf care environment.
  • A genuine interest in golf and turf management.
  • Basic knowledge of greenkeeping practices and machinery operation.
  • NVQ Level 2 in Sports Turf Maintenance (or willingness to work towards).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • A flexible approach to working hours and duties.
  • Good communication skills and a strong work ethic.
  • UK Driving Licence.

 

Desirable:

  • PA1, PA2, and PA6 spraying certificates.
  • Chainsaw, strimming, and other equipment qualifications.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Sports Turf Management.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations in grounds maintenance.
