Head Golf Professional (PGA) - The Shropshire Golf Centre

Reporting to: General Manager/COO of Golf Division

 

Role Purpose:

To lead and deliver an outstanding golf experience for members and visitors through first-class coaching, retail and golf operations. The Head Pro is responsible for the day-to-day running of the golf department, driving revenue growth across green fees, memberships, retail, coaching, and events, while acting as an ambassador for The Shropshire brand and Burhill Group values.

 

Key Responsibilities:

1. Golf Operations & Customer Experience

  • Oversee all golf operations including tee sheet management, visitor check-in, marshalling, starters/rangers, buggy and trolley fleet, and pace-of-play standards.
  • Ensure exceptional service standards in the pro shop, on the first tee, practice areas, and across the course.
  • Work closely with the Course Manager/Superintendent on daily set-up, pin positions, course presentation, and tournament layouts.
  • Maintain and enforce Rules of Golf, handicapping practices, and club policies.

2. Retail & Commercial Performance

  • Manage pro shop operations to maximise revenue and margin through merchandising, stock control, promotions, supplier relationships, and pricing strategy.
  • Set sales targets and KPIs for the golf retail team; monitor performance and implement improvement plans.
  • Deliver accurate forecasting, budgeting, and reporting for golf department revenues and costs.
  • Ensure effective till, cashing-up, and compliance procedures to safeguard assets.

3. Coaching, Player Development & Academy

  • Lead the overall coaching programme, including individual lessons, group clinics, beginner pathways, junior coaching, women’s golf, and membership integration.
  • Develop and grow structured academies and coaching products that suit The Shropshire’s customer mix (members, visitors, improvers, families, juniors).
  • Use technology (e.g., Trackman range/lesson tools) to enhance coaching outcomes and create upsell opportunities into lessons, custom fitting, and membership.
  • Track coaching participation and revenue, producing monthly reports and action plans.

4. Competitions, Events & Visitor Golf

  • Plan, organise, and deliver the full competition calendar including member medals, opens, society days, corporate golf, charity events, and team fixtures.
  • Coordinate golf events with Food & Beverage for smooth delivery of packages, timings, and guest experience.
  • Ensure all events are run professionally, safely, and profitably, with post-event follow-up to drive repeat business.

5. Membership & Community Growth

  • Support membership sales by hosting prospective member visits, taster sessions, and onboarding experiences.
  • Build a welcoming, inclusive golf culture aligned with Burhill Group standards and local community expectations.
  • Represent The Shropshire at regional golf bodies, PGA/County events, and community initiatives.

6. Leadership & Team Development

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and lead assistant professionals, retail staff, and outside services teams.
  • Carry out regular team briefings, performance reviews, and skills development plans.
  • Act as a visible role model for customer care, professionalism, and standards.

7. Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding, equality, data protection, and all relevant health & safety policies.
  • Maintain safe practice across coaching, events, retail areas, and course operations.

 

Person Specification:

Essential

  • PGA Professional (GB&I or equivalent) in good standing.
  • Proven experience leading golf operations and/or a pro shop in a busy club/resort environment.
  • Strong coaching background with evidence of programme growth.
  • Commercially minded with retail, lessons, and event revenue focus.
  • Confident people manager able to build and motivate teams.
  • Excellent communication and customer relationship skills
